OUR STORY
Citizens of TrueWill was first imagined in 2010, when our founder was earning a Master’s in Social Work in Albany, NY — sparked by inspiring coursework and his professors.
Citizens of TrueWill was born of a belief, inspired by John L. McKnight: people are not merely “clients” waiting to be helped — they are citizens with the power to act and deserve to be respected as such.
A Citizen takes control, shapes their future, and drives positive, creative, action.
The word TrueWill comes from Otto Rank’s concept of the will as a central, guiding force in human psychology that allows for self-creation and individuation. It is the power to make choices, assume responsibility for one's actions, and create a unique self by living life fully and asserting one's individuality in the face of the inherent fear of death and life.
TrueWill is the creative force within each person to build something new, to live with purpose, and to leave a mark.
Citizens of TrueWill is a vision of a community of individuals who choose action over passivity, creativity over fear, and possibility over limitation.
